How Effective Is Laser Tattoo Removal?

Tattoos deliver ink deep into your skin tissue. Once applied, tattoo ink can be very difficult to remove. However, Advanced Q-Switched Nd:YAG lasers have completely changed the game of tattoo removal.

PhotoAcoustic Technology can penetrate the skin and target each ink colour using short pulses of specific laser energy wavelengths. The result is your tattoo starts to fade over several treatments.

How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

PicoSure PressureWave technology gently delivers ultra-short energy pulses to your tattoo in a trillionth of a second, protecting the surrounding skin.

It works best on fair to medium untanned skin and can treat almost all tattoos.

If you’ve ever had systemic gold treatment (orally or intravenously), you’re probably not a good candidate for PicoSure treatments.

The RevLite Q-Switched laser treatment delivers maximum success with minimal discomfort for all skin types, including darker skin tones. It features a revolutionary four light wavelengths to target multi-coloured tattoos, including those with vibrant blues, blacks, reds, oranges and purples.

You’ll probably see a temporary whitening after the first treatment.

Then laser system shatters the ink particles into tiny fragments that drain away through your lymphatic system as your skin returns to its normal skin tone and colour.

The PicoSure 755 & 532 wavelength technology is exceptional. But by adding the QSwitch laser with a wavelength of 1064 and combining the science and technology of both lasers’ wavelengths, we can treat all skin types and most popular ink colours at b clinic. It’s the most effective tattoo removal treatment currently available in Australia.

How Do I Know if I’m a Good Candidate for Tattoo Removal?

The best way to find out if you can have your unwanted tattoo removed is to schedule a free consultation at b clinic.

One of our experienced team of clinicians will examine the area and determine the best treatment option based on your skin tone, skin condition, and the size and colour of the tattoo.

What Can I Expect?

  1. You’ll receive an in-depth consultation before treatment.  Please note you will need a skin check from your GP or sun cancer clinic within the past 12 months.
  2. We’ll ask you to lie or sit on the treatment bed and give you eye protection for your safety.
  3. Some tattoos will require a test patch.

Can Laser Treatment Fully Remove a Tattoo?

The majority of tattoos can be entirely removed using laser treatment.

Larger tattoos will typically require more laser sessions than smaller areas. The colouring of the tattoo will also impact the number of sessions necessary to remove the ink entirely. You may need a course of several tattoo removal treatments to achieve your desired results.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The number of treatments required depends on the size, colour, ink used, and whether your tattoo is amateur or professional.

Through clinical observation combined with a diagnostic checklist, your clinician will explain how the treatment will work and the expected number of treatments required to remove your tattoo.

This is done during your consultation when we can see your tattoo and give you the best and most accurate advice.

How Long Does a Laser Tattoo Removal Session Take?

Typically, laser tattoo removal takes around 30 minutes in the clinic, while the process itself only takes a few minutes.

Following your treatment, cream and dressings will be applied.

For large tattoos, your clinician may recommend dividing the tattoo up into smaller sections so that any side effects do not impact your lifestyle or other commitments.

You’ll need to take care of the area following treatment, so the size of the treated area must be manageable.

How Long Do I Need To Wait Between Sessions?

It’s important to leave enough time for your body’s immune system to flush away the ink particles between each treatment session.

We recommend a 6-8 weeks gap between each tattoo removal session for most clients.

This time also allows your skin to heal and repair between sessions and reduces the risk of unwanted side effects like hyperpigmentation.

Does Laser Tattoo Removal Hurt?

Depending on the location of the tattoo, this treatment can be uncomfortable.

We use a Zimmer Cryo 6 cooling system that effectively cools the skin before & during the treatment.

We also offer a topical anaesthetic to numb the area before treatment to minimise discomfort.

Is Tattoo Removal Safe?

Laser tattoo removal is very safe.

The laser light energy is attracted to the dark ink particles, so the surrounding tissue is largely unaffected.

Generally, laser tattoo removal is safer than getting a tattoo as there is less risk of infection.

Will Laser Tattoo Removal Leave a Scar?

It’s very rare for laser removal to cause scarring. When performed by a trained practitioner, the risk is very low. However, removing the tattoo can reveal scarring caused by the tattoo artist when the ink was initially applied or unrelated scars concealed by the tattoo.

During your consultation at b clinic, your practitioner will examine your tattoo and skin condition to identify any existing scarring before you decide to proceed with the laser tattoo removal treatment.

Tattoo Removal Aftercare Information

Ointment and a dressing will be applied to the treated area following your treatment. You can remove the dressing  4-hours post-treatment.

You’ll need to reapply the ointment regularly for up to 10 days after removing your dressing and keep the area protected from the sun for the entire course of your treatment to avoid pigmentation problems.

You may experience redness and a raised rash on the tattoo area post-treatment. Applying an ice pack can help to minimise discomfort. You should avoid strenuous exercise and swimming or saunas for the first few days following treatment to help the skin heal.

You will be given instructions on post-care to minimise any potential post-treatment concerns.

If you are having problems with the treatment area, contact us, and we will arrange to see you as soon as possible for a skin review. Our trained medical professionals are used to seeing skin reactions, and we will advise you whether your reaction is normal or a rare (but possible) infection.

How Do I Prepare for Laser Tattoo Removal?

On the day of treatment, the area should be clean and clear. Wear suitable clothing so the tattoo can be easily accessed, and don’t apply creams, lotions, or skincare products to the area. You should also withstand using fake tan for two before your treatment.

The weeks before and after your laser removal session, you should minimise sun exposure and will also need to protect your skin from the sun by using SPF30 sun cream.

How Many Treatments Will I Need To Fade a Tattoo So I Can Get a New Design?

It depends on the size and colouring of your unwanted tattoo. In some cases, a single tattoo removal procedure can significantly fade a tattoo so that it can be hidden with a cover-up tattoo. Your clinician will be able to advise you on the number of laser therapy sessions required at your free initial consultation.

Is It Easier To Remove a Recent Tattoo?

No, it is not easier to remove a newer tattoo. Generally, older unwanted tattoos are easier to remove as exposure to sunlight causes the ink to break down, and the tattoo fades over time.

But many factors can affect how easy it is to remove a tattoo, including age. If you have regrets over a recent tattoo, your clinician will be able to talk you through the removal process and how long you should wait before starting a course of tattoo removal sessions.

Which Colours Are the Hardest To Remove?

We can successfully remove most tattoo colours. Traditionally, red, blue, and green ink colours are harder to remove. However, laser technology advances mean we can effectively treat these colours and break down the tattoo pigment for complete removal.

Generally, professional tattoos are more challenging to remove than amateur tattoos and may require additional sessions. Your b clinic practitioner will assess your tattoo during your free consultation and advise you on the number of sessions needed to achieve your desired results.

Can You Get Laser Tattoo Removal While Pregnant?

You should not get laser tattoo removal when pregnant. While the risk of infection is very low,  there is a lack of clinical studies to show the effects of laser wavelengths on an unborn fetus. We do not recommend tattoo removal until you have given birth and stopped breastfeeding.

Possible Risks and Complications

Some side effects are a normal part of the tattoo removal process and show that the body is responding positively to the treatment. You may experience redness, swelling, and sensitivity in the treated area for the first few days. Some people also experience blisters and scabs that will subside within 1 week of treatment.

Rarer side effects can include hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation. Those with darker skin tones are more likely to encounter these side effects. However, all unwanted effects should be temporary if a trained tattoo laser removal practitioner performs the treatment and all aftercare instructions are followed.

How Much Does Laser Tattoo Removal Cost?

Treatments start from just $75. Costs are dependent on a few factors, including the size of your unwanted tattoo, ink colours and the number of treatments you’ll require.
