Earlobe Repair

Earlobe repair surgery or lobuloplasty is a procedure to repair an earlobe that has been torn or stretched due to wearing heavy earrings, wearing “gauged” earrings to enlarge the piercing or trauma such as having an earring pulled out of the ear.

Earlobe Repair Procedure

The goal of this procedure is to reconstruct the earlobe and close an existing hole or tear.

A relatively simple cosmetic procedure, lobuloplasty is performed with a local anaesthetic. The earlobe can be trimmed or stitched to repair the damage.

This procedure usually takes less than an hour and is accompanied by a minimal recovery period.

Most patients are back to work the next day.

What to Expect

Lobuloplasty is a cosmetic procedure to repair an earlobe that has been torn or stretched.

The ear lobe repair procedure is minimally invasive and is performed with the use of a local anaesthetic.

Once the treated area is numb, the cosmetic doctor will excise the damaged earlobe.

The incision is then carefully stitched to correct and repair the earlobe.

Depending on the type of lobuloplasty, the doctor may reshape the earlobe tissue to achieve natural-looking results.

The earlobe repair surgery takes less than an hour per earlobe. There is no pain during the procedure and little to no downtime. You can immediately get back to social activities and work commitments.

What Results Can I Expect?

The earlobe repair procedure can correct stretched and torn earlobes to achieve natural-looking results and restore your self-confidence. The final results of treatment will depend on the type of earlobe repair.

For a split earlobe, you can expect a thin linear scar in the centre of the ear lobe. Over the following months, the small scar will fade. For the correction of elongated earlobes, there will be a slightly larger scar in the centre of the earlobe.

How Long Does Recovery Take?

You will be able to get back to most everyday activities immediately. However, you may experience bruising, swelling, and redness around the surgically repaired ear lobe. These side effects should subside within 72 hours of treatment.

For the first week following your earlobe repair, you will need to apply a topical antibiotic to prevent infection and keep the area clean. You should also avoid any strenuous exercise to prevent swelling and allow the area time to heal.

Around 2 weeks after the procedure, you will attend a follow-up visit with your cosmetic doctor at b clinic. The doctor will assess the results and remove any sutures.

Does the Earlobe Repair Procedure Hurt?

Earlobe repair surgery is not painful. During the procedure, a topical anaesthetic is used to minimise any discomfort. After the treatment, you may experience some swelling and bruising that can cause the ear area to ache. This can be treated using over-the-counter painkillers and will subside within a couple of days of the earlobe repair procedure.

Is the Procedure Safe?

Lobuloplasty is a relatively simple cosmetic procedure that is very safe when performed by a trained and experienced cosmetic doctor. The earlobe repair procedure also has high patient satisfaction, with most people very happy with the results.

All procedures involve some risk of infection, but the risk is minimal if you follow the post-care instructions provided by your doctor.

Will I Need To Attend a Follow-Up Appointment?

You will need to return to the clinic for a complimentary treatment review around 2 weeks after your earlobe repair surgery. Your doctor will assess the results and make sure the earlobe is healing correctly. If non-absorbable stitches are used, your doctor will remove them during the follow-up appointment.

How Will I Need to Sleep After My Earlobe Repair Procedure?

You should try to avoid sleeping on the treated area. Most people find that they instinctively move to protect their ear during sleep. You will naturally change position if you roll onto the treated area and feel uncomfortable. Keeping your head raised by using an extra pillow can help to reduce swelling overnight following earlobe repairs.

How Long Will the Results Last?

The results of an earlobe repair procedure are permanent. As long as you don’t tear or stretch your earlobe again, you can expect lobuloplasty results to last indefinitely.

How Do I Prepare for Earlobe Repair Procedure?

There is very little preparation required for earlobe repair cosmetic surgery. The minimally invasive procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and requires less than an hour of your time in clinic.

In the week before your procedure, you should avoid taking any blood-thinning medication or supplements that can increase the risk of side effects. You should consult your doctor if you take any prescription medication that could affect the healing process or increase the risk of bruising and bleeding following the surgical procedure.

For 48 hours before the procedure, you should avoid alcohol consumption and smoking as they can hinder the wound healing process.

You will be provided with post-operative aftercare instructions to make sure the recovery from earlobe repair is smooth and optimal results are achieved.

Will I Be Left With Scars?

You will have a small scar on the earlobe following treatment. Immediately after the procedure, the scar will appear red. As the body heals over the following months, scarring will fade and become less noticeable. Within 6 months, there will be no obvious signs of the procedure.

Can I Re-Pierce My Ears After Earlobe Surgery?

Yes. It is possible to have a re-piercing following earlobe repair surgery. However, you will not be able to have the new piercing in the same place as the previous piercing. It’s also important to note that wearing heavy earrings could damage the ear lobes.

Where Is the Earlobe Repair Performed?

Earlobe repairs are an outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia. The surgery takes place in our b clinic medical clinic and is performed by one of our experienced cosmetic doctors. After the surgery, you are free to drive yourself home.

Possible Risks and Complications

The earlobe repair procedure is a low-risk cosmetic procedure. Side effects such as bruising, swelling, and tenderness are common following treatment. These effects should subside within a few days of the procedure.

As with all surgical procedures, there is a risk of infection. This is rare but can be treated with antibiotics if necessary. There is also a risk of asymmetry of the earlobes if an inexperienced doctor performs the procedure. Post-treatment, there will be a small scar on the skin that will fade over the following months.

How Much Does Earlobe Surgery Cost?

The cost of an earlobe repair procedure depends on the damage to the ear and the results you want to achieve. During your free initial consultation at b clinic, Dr Lee Lua will examine your earlobe and explain what can be achieved with an earlobe repair procedure. You will also receive a tailored quote for the cost of treatment. Book your free consultation today.
