Your eyes speak volumes

We’ve all been there. We feel youthful and energetic, then we catch a glimpse in the mirror, and the appearance of our eyes doesn’t seem to match.

b clinic’s Founder and Creative Director, Dr Lee Lua explains that as we get older, one of the most common external signs of ageing is the hollowing of our upper eyelids, leaving us look more tired and older than we feel.

“Addressing these concerns isn’t just about erasing years. It’s about restoring vibrancy and reviving vitality. At the heart of my approach lies the art of rejuvenation to correct the subtle nuances that contribute to the look often associated with ageing. From combating facial hollowing to addressing skin laxity, my methods can help restore a refreshed and youthful look,” says Dr Lee.

So, what causes upper eyelid hollowing?

The development of asymmetry and hollowing in the upper eyelids stems from a reduction of bone and soft tissue volume. This loss of volume is typically attributed to ageing or can be due to genetic factors.

Dr Lee explains, “This hollowing can create a sunken appearance in the eyes and cause a skeletal look, potentially making an individual appear unwell or older than their actual age. Fortunately, we can correct asymmetry caused by volume loss through advanced dermal filler injectable techniques, which work to add fullness back into the eye socket, giving the area a more rejuvenated and fresh look.”

What is the procedure, and what does it involve?

The condition is commonly referred to as an “A-Frame” deformity, which describes the A-shaped appearance of the upper eyelid framing the eye. More specifically, it refers to the less-than-desirable hollowing effect of the eyelid and eye socket. The Upper Eyelid Filler treatment is an ideal solution for this. It involves restoring volume to the upper eyelids, reducing the tired and gaunt look.

As great as this procedure can be, it is paramount to understand that this is a highly delicate area of the face, and only the most skilled and experienced practitioners should perform it. Dr Lee emphasises the importance of a thorough consultation and assessment before the procedure.

He says, “The consultation is the most critical step. You first need to understand whether or not you are a suitable candidate. Still, even more importantly, your practitioner needs to craft a personalised plan that will achieve your individual needs and desired look. If you are concerned about the appearance of your upper eyelids or heavy brows, I recommend you book a free consultation.”

During the procedure, a cannula and dermal filler are used to treat and correct the concerns in the eye area.

Working with the highest quality of dermal filler, Dr Lee utilises a blunt cannula to safely and cautiously deliver the dermal filler product into the fat pad above the upper eyelid.

Dr Lee said, “As we age, our eyebrows can lose their structural support, causing them to appear heavy. If needed, I will strategically inject the dermal filler product into the brow bone area during the upper eyelid filler treatment to provide support and structure. This will add projection and height to the eyebrows, resulting in a more youthful appearance.”

How many treatments are required, and how long do results last

It’s perfectly normal for clients to undergo 1-3 treatments to effectively address the hollow appearance in the eye area and reach their desired results.

Dr Lee says: “I approach each procedure with precision and caution, ensuring that I enhance and correct your natural facial features without producing an overdone effect. At our clinic, we also offer our clients complimentary follow-up appointments, which are scheduled three months following their first treatment to ensure the quality of the results are as desired and make any further adjustments if needed.”

The final results of the procedure can last anywhere from a year and a half to two years, providing excellent longevity.

What are the benefits of this procedure?

The Upper Eyelid Filler treatment has a variety of benefits.

Not only does it refine your upper eyelids and improve symmetry, but it also revitalises your overall appearance, which many of us know can do wonders for our self-confidence.

Despite the many benefits, not all candidates are suited for this treatment.

Dr Lee says, “Individuals with drooping eyelids or eyelid ptosis, which results in excessive skin laxity, are not suitable candidates for this procedure. Because of this, I encourage clients to book a free consultation so we can properly assess their individual needs. I really want to stress the importance of having only an experienced medical professional with advanced expertise in dermal filler treatments perform this treatment. It is a highly specialised technique that requires careful consideration of individual needs and in-depth knowledge.”

So, what are the costs associated with this procedure?

At b clinic, our foundational values are anchored in prioritising our clients’ well-being. We are dedicated to crafting personalised treatment plans that address every aspect of our client’s health, including their physical, emotional, social, and financial needs. Nefertiti Lift: A Non-Surgical Solution for Jaw Definition

If you’ve ever dreamt of achieving a more defined jawline without the need for surgery, the Nefertiti Lift might be the key to unlocking your aesthetic aspirations.

Offering non-surgical solutions that redefine our notions of ageing gracefully, the Nefertiti lift procedure is named after the iconic Egyptian queen, renowned for her chiselled jawline and timeless allure.

b clinic’s founder and Creative Director Dr Lee Lua shares his expertise on the procedure, sharing that “the essence of the Nefertiti Lift is anchored in its simplicity and effectiveness”.

What is the Nefertiti lift?

Dr. Lee explains, “the Nefertiti lift is a non-surgical and minimally invasive technique that utilises anti-wrinkle injections to rejuvenate the neck and jawline to effectively address the signs of aging.”

The procedure’s success lies in the skilled administration of the anti-wrinkle injections.

Dr Lee shares “the injector must precisely target key muscles in the neck and jaw region and doing this well comes from experience.

We target this area to temporarily relax the Platysma bands, which cover the front side of the neck as they are the vertical muscles that pull down on the lower face, chin, and jaw, causing wrinkles and sagging over time.

When these muscles are relaxed, the skin becomes smoother in texture and the jawline gains more definition, leaving the client with a more youthful and refreshed look,” he says.

How long do the results last?

Dr Lee emphasises that while the results of this procedure can be transformative, it is important to note that they are temporary in nature.

“Patients typically require repeat treatments every three to four months to maintain optimal outcomes.

While the results are not permanent, many patients find the convenience of non-surgical treatments to be a preferable option compared to traditional surgical procedures.” he says.

Who is this treatment perfect for?

Dr Lee encourages clients to book in a free consultation to assess their suitability for the procedure.

“The procedure is most effective for individuals with minimal skin laxity and without significant neck fullness and therefore, we recommend taking advantage of our free consultation process.

At b clinic we make sure that our advice and treatments are specially tailored for our clients to suit their own individual needs,” he says.

Those who are suited for the Nefertiti lift can expect to see several benefits, including:

  • Improved jaw definition
  • Reduces appearance of neckbands
  • A reduction of lines and wrinkles around the mouth
  • Smoothing out of chin dimples
  • Suitable for those with a tendency to tense the neck
  • Elongates and smooths neck

What can a client expect during the consultation?

“During your free consultation,” Dr. Lee assures, “our team will take the time to understand your aesthetic concerns and carefully assess your facial features.

Following this assessment, our skilled practitioners will personalise the injections to align with your specific needs, ensuring a harmonious outcome with symmetrical results,” he notes.

Dr Lee emphasises the need to manage expectations when it comes to the procedure.

“It’s important to remain realistic about the results, as the aim of the lift is to provide a subtle enhancement to your jawline” he says.

The Nefertiti lift procedure is designed for efficiency, typically taking less than 30 minutes to complete, with minimal downtime afterwards. Patients can expect to resume their daily activities following the treatment.

The Nefertiti lift treatment is highly effective in achieving a rejuvenated facial appearance, with noticeable results becoming evident within just three weeks of treatment.

“The cost of a Nefertiti lift starts at $400,” Dr. Lee mentions, “offering flexibility for clients who may choose to only target individual or smaller areas of the Platysma bands for approximately $150, providing versatility to suit all needs.”

Injectables in the City: A Proactive Approach to Prevention

Driven by a passion cultivated over years of dedicated practice, b clinic’s Brisbane City clinic practitioners, Dr. Elle and Dr Ann-Marie are at the forefront of reshaping the narrative in aesthetic treatment. Leading the charge towards preserving youthful radiance early on.

Starting Young: Prevention, Not Controversy

Injectables for prevention may sound unconventional, but Dr Elle and Dr Ann-Marie dismantle the often-confusing debate surrounding this idea. It’s not about drastic changes or extreme enhancements, which is where many of the myths stem from. Instead, it’s a strategic and proactive method of preserving youthful looks.

Dr Elle understands the concerns surrounding starting young, especially when it comes to noticeable enhancements.

“Arguments that people should wait as long as possible to start injectable treatments are almost always rooted in misconceptions.”

She points out, “The criticism tends to arise when individuals opt for extreme changes that deviate from their natural features. It’s not about the age at which you start; it’s about the mindset you adopt and the choices you make along the way,” emphasises Dr Elle.

Starting injectable treatments young is an investment in a sustainable, long-term aesthetic journey. It’s essential to differentiate between enhancements and maintenance.

Dr Ann-Marie shares this sentiment and has found that early prevention provides the best future solutions.

“Treating frown and forehead lines with muscle relaxant from an early stage works best and is particularly effective at reversing the depth of the lines.

It also tends to have the best results for keeping the areas looking more youthful and line free for longer, with the appropriate maintenance,” she said.

Beauty is more than skin deep

The concept of maintenance takes centre stage at Brisbane City Clinic.

Clients collaborate with both practitioners to identify potential areas of concern and to keep their youthful appearance before things change, rather than coming in later and trying to reverse signs of ageing.

One major factor that comes into play for clients is genetics, which are a great indicator of what one should expect to see on their own appearance.

Dr Elle acknowledges the genetic predisposition to certain concerns.

“We tend to mimic not just the physical traits but also the emotional expressions of our family. Preventative aesthetics involve understanding these patterns and tailoring treatments accordingly.

Your family’s emotional expressions often leave a blueprint on your skin. Smile lines, frown lines, and forehead wrinkles may have a familial pattern and we can look at these as a guide in prevention,” she notes.

“It’s not uncommon for someone to walk in and say, ‘My mum has this,’ or ‘My sister is starting to deal with that.

Free consultations provide a safe space to address these concerns. But it’s not just about identifying issues; it’s about co-creating a plan that aligns with your goals and addresses your concerns based on familial indicators” she says.

Dr Ann-Marie also stresses the importance of educating clients on what to expect from the ageing process before treatment.

“I like to educate my clients on the changes that occur with each decade of ageing and I then examine what changes have already happened.

This allows me to advise my clients about what the most suitable treatment is for their concerns and allows me to come up with a proactive plan for prevention,” she said.

Younger individuals who are expressing concerns about ageing and familial trends are encouraged to book in a free consultation where they can get personalised plans that prioritise prevention.

A holistic approach to intervention

Starting injectable treatments younger is about adopting a holistic approach. This means getting lower doses for longer, which is not only easier for maintenance but also creates a well-rounded aesthetic journey.

Dr Elle emphasises that it’s not merely about halting the aging process but about embracing a lifestyle that fosters long-term results.

“It’s not just about fixing isolated issues; we want to create a comprehensive and sustainable plan for overall well-being,” she says.

Breaking away from conventional norms, Dr. Elle not only supports, but encourages a growing trend–the increasing interest in neck treatment.

As she champions this approach, she emphasises a fundamental reminder:

“The face doesn’t stop at your chin, and therefore it is often equally important to also address this area when looking at preventative injectables.”

This forward-thinking perspective underscores the importance of comprehensive treatments that extend to the neck, ensuring a cohesive and harmonious aesthetic outcome.

The Key to Unlocking Success is Understanding The Client

Dr Ann-Marie expresses the importance of an in-depth assessment of the clients’ needs before developing the course of treatment.

“When treating the neck area there are a few important considerations such as the extent of skin damage, the amount of skin laxity, volume of adipose tissue below the chin as well as around the neck muscles and the natural recession of the chin anatomically.

Together these factors impact the possible success of non-invasive cosmetic treatment or need for plastic surgery to adequately address my client’s concern.

It is important to take the time to really assess my client and properly explore their wishes and expectations,” she says.

Beyond just appointments, Dr Elle and Dr Ann-Marie see each consultation as an opportunity to craft a personalised and enriching experience. One thing guaranteed for any client visiting the Brisbane City Clinic is a trust that they will not only be heard but also nurtured with expert care.

b clinic proudly provides personalised recommendations and guidance to all patients and regular consultations are encouraged both by Dr Elle and Dr Ann-Marie.

“We want you to book a consultation and ask us all of the questions.

At b clinic we deeply care about your treatment goals and delivering to your individual needs, so we’re happy to take the time to help you get the best out of your treatments,” says Dr Elle.

Dr Ann-Marie shares this value and believes that getting to know clients on a deeper level during free consultations is the best way to achieve your desired results.

“Getting to know my clients during the free consultation is priority. This time allows me to relate discussed treatments back to them personally and assess whether they are suitable for the clients ‘individual expectations and anatomy.

This information that I have explored in our free consultation is what then forms the basis of my knowledge and from there, we can concentrate on more on procedures, techniques and results ongoing,” she says.

b clinic 2024: Elevating Aesthetics, Innovation, and Client Confidence

Our goals and mission 2024

Dr Lee started b clinic in 2010 with one goal in mind, a goal that stands the test of time: to assist his clients in realising their aesthetic goals.

While every client possesses unique needs, Dr. Lee notes a shared desire among them — to radiate freshness and experience a rejuvenated sense of self.

“What drives my passion after all these years is the constant pursuit of new skills and expanding my knowledge,” said Dr Lee.

“The whole team at b clinic shares my passion for providing the best service possible. We are constantly improving and evolving our skills as a means of ensuring that we are best positioned to address our client’s worries about looking overdone.”

“We aim to maintain our client’s natural beauty and preserve their individuality, to help them look and feel like the very best version of themselves.”

Dr Lee notes that there are various reasons behind the appearance of ageing signs and these are important factors when choosing the right treatment procedures.

After 25 years of performing injectables, Dr Lee expresses that he has a greater understanding of how dermal filler works.

He says, “It’s more important now than ever before that the dermal filler product is delivered and injected into the correct facial plane and that the necessary and precise quantity of product is used.”

“I have developed proven injectable techniques that can help in this regard. By doing so, we can create a fresher look for our clients without disturbing their natural expression, which is very important.”

Overcoming challenges and focus on providing excellent customer service

We understand that navigating the costs of injectable treatments can be confusing for our clients. They rely on our expertise to guide them in determining the right pricing and treatments for maintaining or enhancing their youthful appearance

To alleviate this confusion, we decided to standardise the price for all dermal filler treatments regardless of the treatment area.

Our aim is to deliver natural and beautiful treatment results while ensuring maximum safety for our clients.

Throughout the injectable procedure, we go above and beyond to ensure optimal treatment outcomes, prioritising excellence over inflated prices for specific areas. With a quarter-century of experience, we recognise that delivering safe and expert care demands the same high level of expertise, skill, and precision across all facial areas.

Unlike other cosmetic clinics that opt for higher fees in intricate areas like tear troughs, noses, and temples, we take pride in our ethical and responsible approach. Our commitment lies in delivering clinical excellence, providing quality care, and offering premium products — all at a fair and transparent price for our valued clients

Our pricing for 1ml of dermal filler stands at $550, applicable to various treatment areas such as lips, nose, tear troughs, temples, and mid-face.

This transparent pricing structure mirrors our dedication to fairness, ensuring our clients receive premium products and excellent service without hidden costs or surprises.

*Our standard injectable treatment pricing applies across all locations excluding the Queen St clinic.

Mastering the Art and Science of Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

A Crucial Blend of Expertise, Passion, and Facial Aesthetics

Non-surgical rhinoplasty, a trend that gained popularity in the late ’90s, continues to soar. The allure lies in its ability to enhance confidence without the commitment of surgical procedures. Unlike traditional rhinoplasty, non-surgical options provide temporary, reversible results through dermal fillers. This procedure is appealing to those seeking instant aesthetic transformations without the pain and expense associated with surgery.

b clinic’s Cosmetic Doctor, Dr Frank Mallawaarachchi answers everything you need to know about the rise of this popular non-surgical procedure.

Sculpting Confidence: Who Can Benefit from Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty?

The number one advantage of a non-surgical rhinoplasty is its ability to change the look of the nose quickly and affordably. Those with a bump or hump on the bridge of the nose, poor nasal definition, or asymmetry find this procedure particularly appealing. Additionally, individuals with a droopy nasal tip may benefit from injectable treatments to enhance their side profile and boost confidence.

Dr Frank shared how a “less is more” approach can have maximum impact on facial structure and harmony.

“This beautiful young client of mine came to me with concerns about the shape of her nose.”

“Subtle amounts of filler in the right places can result in a beautiful and refreshed look, as we can see above,” Dr Frank shared.

During the consultation, Dr Frank identified a few minor irregularities that could be corrected to improve her side and front profile.

“I carefully and strategically placed 0.4ml of filler to lift the tip and to straighten the nose perfectly and then placed 0.3ml of filler in the medial malar (lower cheek area) to give that subtle contoured appearance,” said Dr Frank.

More great examples of how this procedure can enhance the face can be seen in the patient’s before and after pictures below:

“Our client was very concerned with the appearance of his nose. He wanted to disguise his ‘hump’,” said Dr Frank.

To correct this, Dr Frank artistically used 1ml of dermal filler to smooth out this client’s nasal bridge irregularities.

To create balance, he has combined non-surgical rhinoplasty with a subtle chin enhancement treatment to create a more refined, harmonious, and beautifully balanced profile for his client below.

“Like many of our clients with minor nose irregularities, this client’s primary desire was to straighten and correct the nasal bridge”.

“However, clients are not always aware that correcting their nose irregularities can emphasise that they have a small chin, creating an imbalance in their side profile.”

When seeking out any procedure, it is best to take advantage of the free consultation as individual results, goals, and treatments vary.

Although great for aesthetic enhancements, non-surgical rhinoplasty can sometimes have its drawbacks.

While it can create the illusion of a smaller, narrower nose, it cannot alter the structural integrity or alignment of the nasal bones or address underlying breathing issues, so it is important to discuss your goals with your medical practitioner as it does not provide the same benefits as surgery.

The Importance of Experience: Understanding Anatomy for Safe and Beautiful Results

Achieving the perfect balance and harmony in a non-surgical nose procedure demands more than just skill—it requires an in-depth comprehension of facial anatomy. The anatomy of the nose and the face as a whole is essential to understand and to determine the exact level of treatment and the risks associated with the procedure.

Dr Frank recommends choosing a highly qualified medical provider with extensive anatomy knowledge.

“At b clinic, our medical injectable team consistently stay updated with the latest advancements in injectable techniques,” shared Dr Frank.

Similar to filler injections in other facial areas, the procedure for nose enhancements adheres to the same careful injection process.

“Prior to administering the treatment, your practitioner should conduct a thorough medical examination to evaluate for any necessary steps that will ensure the injectable procedure is executed with the utmost safety and security.”

“This comprehensive approach not only minimises risks but also delivers beautiful and natural results,” said Dr Frank.

Mastering Beauty: The Harmonious Fusion of Art and Science

Once all assessments have been made, the practitioner can skillfully marry art and science to create harmony and balance in the patient’s facial structure.

By selecting the ideal filler – often favouring a structural medium-size molecule filler – the practitioner injects this into the nose’s bridge; this precise process is complemented by gentle massage, moulding the filler for exact positioning and optimal aesthetic refinement. Whether related to concerns about the tip of the nose or excessive nasal flare, muscle relaxants and fillers can work together beautifully to create the perfect balanced result.

However, to achieve facial harmony, the practitioner’s skills should extend beyond just considering the nose and must take into account the whole face. In Dr Frank’s experience, more often than not, a patient’s lower face (most commonly the chin) must be treated to create a balanced profile.

The angles- Naso-frontal angle, Dorsal angle, Nasolabial angle, Nasofacial angle and Nasomental angle are very important for the practitioner to understand, assess and correct, keeping the natural curves and angles when the procedure is performed.

As non-surgical rhinoplasty becomes more and more popular and accessible, the importance of skilled practitioners who prioritise safety and individualised care is paramount.

Dr Frank Mallawaarachchi’s emphasis on the delicate fusion of expertise, passion, and facial aesthetics underscores the importance of a well-informed and skilled practitioner in achieving harmonious, natural results.

FAQ’s

Does the procedure hurt?

Non-surgical rhinoplasty is designed to be a relatively comfortable procedure for patients.

Local anaesthetics are routinely utilised, contributing to a numb sensation in the nose immediately upon the injection of the filler. Feedback from most patients indicates that the procedure is generally considered quite comfortable.

What should I expect after non-surgical nose filler treatment?

You may experience swelling, redness, and bruising immediately after your non-surgical rhinoplasty. These side effects are normal and will go away within a few hours or days. There is no downtime, so patients can return to normal activities and work the same day as your non-surgical rhinoplasty.

Patients need to avoid touching the area that was treated following your liquid rhinoplasty, avoid massaging, sleeping face down or wearing tight-fitting glasses. It is advised to be gentle with the area treated for at least one-two weeks after.

How often will I need to top up my nose filler?

Patients can expect results from nose filler treatment to last from six months to one year (or sometimes longer). But, since temporary filler dissolves slowly on its own, even if the results exceed the one-year mark, you will need to repeat the treatment to maintain the results. Generally, you should get a top-up every six months.

How much does nose filler cost?

There can be serious risks if the injector is not exceptionally well-trained, so please don’t pick a provider based on the cost of treatment, whether it be a lower or a higher cost.

Our dermal filler products now have a fixed price, regardless of the treatment area. We believe that paying more for complicated areas does not reduce the risks. Even though we’ve eliminated these extra costs, you can still expect the same high level of care and service from our team of doctors and nurses.

Non-surgical Rhinoplasty – 1ml dermal filler $550*.

*Please note, the dermal filler pricing applies across all b clinic locations, excluding Queen St, Brisbane City clinic.

Three Elements to Look for in your Cosmetic Injector

When it comes to looking your best, you want to choose the best. A trusted medical cosmetic injector is one that truly cares about your entire experience, from advice and personalised treatment plans through to quality products and certainty of price.

So how do you choose the best injector? It almost goes without saying that experienced and highly skilled medical practitioners are paramount for your safety and overall satisfaction. However, it should never stop there. We believe authenticity, customer-centric care and honesty are everything when it comes to choosing your injector.

  1. Experience, care, and honesty

It’s important to find a cosmetic provider that listens to your concerns. Cosmetic injectable treatments can rejuvenate and enhance our appearance but naturally, do also come with some risk. This is why choosing your injector carefully is so important.

Your injector should possess expertise in facial aesthetics and anatomy, providing honest guidance on what’s achievable and best suited to enhance your best natural features. Both knowledge and injection technique play a crucial role in achieving long-lasting natural results.

When placed incorrectly, dermal filler can hinder the natural movement of the face and leave the effect of having had work done, which many clients like to avoid. This is why having a free consultation before any treatment is the most important first step for addressing the root of your concerns and achieving fresh and natural looking results.

During your consultation, our experts will outline all possible risks and side effects, and with your safety in mind, will provide a personalised plan to help you reach your treatment goals.

  1. Considerate of your financial wellbeing

When choosing an injector for your aesthetic treatment, cost shouldn’t be your sole deciding factor. Of course, and particularly in this current economic climate – cost is certainly an important aspect but value should be a bigger focus. The most critical things to consider are the injector’s experience, care, and precision as these are the factors which will decide your overall experience.

We understand clients want certainty, transparency, and value for money. To give you peace of mind and to avoid confusion around pricing, we decided to create an exciting new pricing structure that we believe is fair, authentic and provides value for money. This will allow clients to plan their treatments with trust and confidence.

Our new pricing structure means you know exactly what you’re paying for – giving you full predictability and support in achieving your aesthetic goals.

Our practitioners are available six days a week and, on most Sundays, emphasising your support and peace of mind during your aesthetic journey. With over two decades of industry experience, our injectable experts are passionate about helping you become the best version of yourself.

A Practitioner’s Guide to Long Lasting Natural Dermal Filler Results

Cosmetic injectables such as dermal fillers are amongst Australia’s most popular non-surgical facial treatments. For good reason too, as they are a proven and effective way to freshen up your appearance.

Dermal filler treatments are akin to a journey. Although a single session can yield results, occasionally, a few more sessions are needed to achieve the desired outcome.

Rushing the process with excessive product can lead to unnatural results, which may only become evident months or years later. Your final look depends on your body’s unique rejuvenation process, as each individual’s response varies based on their body and the injector’s technique.

Let’s start from the top:

  1. The Natural rejuvenation processes and how to determine a natural result

Dr Lee begins by explaining, “When we inject dermal filler, we stimulate the body’s natural rejuvenation healing process”.

In the past, a common dermal filler approach involved repeatedly adding millilitres of filler to enhance specific facial regions like the cheeks, jawline, or lips. However, this dated technique can yield an unnatural appearance over time, resulting in stiffness that hampers your natural facial expressions.

“It’s crucial to entrust your dermal filler treatment to an experienced practitioner who can provide expert guidance on when to proceed with dermal filler and when to refrain,” said Dr. Lee.

Many people seeking dermal filler treatment want to achieve natural-looking results that not only helps them maintain a fresher look but also lasts as long as possible.

Dr Lee continues to explain that “When we look at ourselves in the mirror, we don’t typically see what others see. It’s not obvious to us how we look, because when we are looking at ourselves, we tend to maintain a neutral expression, one free from laughter and talking for example,”.

With 23 years of experience in injecting, Dr Lee emphasises the importance of proper dermal filler placement, avoiding excessive use in a short period of time and ensuring a natural result that doesn’t hinder the natural movement of the face.

When dermal filler is placed incorrectly, it can leave the appearance of having work done which many like to avoid.

“My clients are looking for a treatment that will refresh and rejuvenate their appearance in a subtle and undetectable way. A mere before and after image does not determine a natural cosmetic injectable result, this is demonstrated when family and friends won’t know they’ve had anything done, but will say they look great” says Dr Lee.

At b clinic, our approach to dermal filler injectable treatments has significantly evolved over the last 23 years, allowing us to create more natural-looking results using advanced injectable techniques.

  1. Hydrate your skin from within with water intake

You may be asking yourself, what can’t water solve? But the fact is, hydration is the skin’s superpower.

The impact hydration has may sound simple but the difference can significantly enhance success.

“I also recommend maintaining a good routine for drinking plenty of water between treatments to ensure healthy skin regeneration throughout.”

Sounds like a good reason to raise a glass to the magic of H20!

  1. The right skincare routine

Dermal fillers offer a highly effective way to turn back the clock, as it can rejuvenate your appearance by strengthening the inner structures.

However, to optimise the results, prioritising the health of your skin is crucial. It’s possible to have healthy skin in your twenties, thirties, forties, fifties and beyond with a little bit of effort.

For skin to look as fresh and youthful as possible, a little self-care and dedication can go a long way.

Dr Lee says ”Clients will always see a better result following their injectable treatments when their skin is in a healthy condition. It’s never too late to start.”

One of the most important ways to ensure the health of your skin is by protecting it against harmful UV rays.

“If you’re not already applying a good strong sunscreen, I beg you, please start immediately – that’s true whether you’re already undergoing filler treatments or simply investigating the option for the first time,” said Dr Lee.

Applying 50+ sunscreen and using active skincare daily is a great place to start. Additionally, be selective about the skincare ingredients. Take the time and be selective about your skincare ingredients. Read the back of the label and research the science. You won’t regret it. Look for those with proven anti-aging ingredients that support cell turnover, which can help reduce lines and improve the texture and tone of skin. Serums that include ingredients such as Retinol, Vitamin C, Niacinamide and Hyaluronic Acid will all do wonders for your between-filler treatment maintenance efforts.

So now you’ve selected a highly qualified injector and are sipping up a water storm. What’s next? What should you be doing post-appointment (and in between) to bolster your filler results?

According to Dr Lee: “The trick is mostly maintenance, from skincare and diet routines through to other specialised treatments, all can have a key role for lengthening filler outcomes.”

  1. Supercharge your at-home-approach with in-clinic skin support

As well as your DIY efforts to promote youthful and radiant skin – be that your weekly skincare routine or maintaining a healthy diet with regular exercise – it is also a worthy investment to consult an expert for in-clinic skin treatments that can complement your filler and help maintain your refreshed appearance.

The most supportive treatments to try alongside filler and anti-wrinkle treatments are those that are also designed to keep skin youthful and radiant. Chemical peels, skin-needling, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), intense pulsed light (IPL), Picosure laser and other non-ablative laser treatments are those most recommended by b clinic physicians. All treatments are formulated to help promote collagen and elastin production, both great ways to achieve healthier-looking, glowing and energised (read: youthful) skin.

At the end of the day, Dr. Lee says there is one key takeaway to consider: “If in doubt, consult your practitioner and ask us all the questions. We care about your treatment goals and delivering to your individual needs so we’re happy to take the time to help you get the best out of your treatments”.

b clinic proudly provides personalised recommendations and guidance to all patients. Regular consultations are encouraged. All new treatment plans from the medical cosmetic provider’s predominately doctor-only clinics are offered free and with zero obligation.

Sagging Face and Jowls or a Double Chin? Which is Better – Ultherapy or HIFU?

At b clinic, we understand that no two faces are the same. It’s the reason we tailor bespoke, personalised treatment plans to address client’s individual needs, especially non-surgical facial rejuvenation and contouring. Two popular treatments we’re comparing today are Ultherapy and HIFU.

Honesty is the best policy in life. We want to be clear that no non-surgical treatment benefits can make you look 30 years younger. That being said, people who are unhappy with heaviness and/or jowls in the lower face may find Ultherapy or HIFU an ideal option to:

  • Improve facial contours, including jawline definition
  • Reduce heaviness in the lower face
  • Reduce the appearance of jowls in the lower face
  • Reduce the appearance of a double chin
Ultherapy – The Basics

At b clinic, we have been treating our clients with Ultherapy successfully for the last 7 years. It is a non-invasive skin treatment that penetrates deep into your skin to trigger the production of collagen and elastin.

Heat is the science behind Ultherapy. The treatment harnesses the power of micro-focused ultrasound waves (MIFU) to generate a thermal effect. This, in turn, galvanises your body’s natural ability to create collagen and elastin. As you already know, collagen and elastin production slows as we age, leaving skin weak and less elastic.

Real Imaging is a Real Plus in Ultherapy

Ultherapy is prized for its ability to go deeper than other skin rejuvenation treatments and provides visible benefits … and in a single treatment too! Another standout benefit to Ultherapy is its use of real-time imaging. This game-changing improvement enables our treating practitioners at b clinic to visualise dermal and subdermal tissue layers. This improved imaging means your practitioner can deliver treatment energy to areas that need it most.

The final results of an Ultherapy treatment are achieved after 3-6 months. You may see some gradual improvements over this period as the body produces more collagen and elastin.

Common Side Effects of Ultherapy Facial Skin Tightening

Millions of Ultherapy treatments have been performed successfully. Side effects are rare and temporary and may include:

  • Skin redness
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Tingling
An Introduction to High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

Originally developed for medical purposes, High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) joined the field of aesthetic tools in 2008. Since then, it has been a popular treatment for stimulating collagen and lifting tissues. It is similar to Ultherapy but different in several significant ways.

An important thing you should know about HIFU is that it does not provide practitioners with real-time imaging and visualisation. It is known as a blind treatment. In some cases, this can mean decreased safety and inconsistent results. As the layer being treated is not seen, there is an increased risk of heating or damaging important structures (bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels).

Like Ultherapy, HIFU uses ultrasound energy to heat the skin. The difference is that HIFU triggers cellular damage in the tissue just beneath the skin’s surface rather than the deeper layers reached by Ultherapy. HIFU is often recommended to younger patients whose skin laxity is mild.

Who Wins in HIFU vs Ultherapy? YOU!

You may be wondering why we haven’t pointed to which of these two treatments is better. Better means something different to everyone we treat:

  • HIFU is often recommended to younger patients whose skin laxity is mild.
  • Ultherapy is generally a better option for mature patients who have skin laxity because it can do deeper with real-time imaging, and better results can be achieved.

Another consideration is cost. Ultherapy treatments generally begin at $900 for a neck treatment or just under $2000 for a lower face treatment, with only one treatment being required. Facial rejuvenation with HIFU averages from $950 to $2800, with three treatments being required.

Common Side Effects of HIFU Skin Treatment

HIFU treatments are generally well-tolerated by patients. Common short-term complaints include:

  • Blotchy skin
  • Swelling
  • Numbness
  • Hyperpigmentation
Caution: Know Your HIFU and Your Practitioner

There are several brands of HIFU devices in the market, but not all of them are made to medical-grade standards. With no regulations in place, many spas and salons are equipped with generic HIFU devices. Beware! There is no way of knowing if these machines and the treatments they deliver are safe or effective.

In the hands of a professional, a medical-grade HIFU treatment can be beneficial. In the hands of an amateur with a knock-off device, HIFU can be extremely painful and/or neo-collagenesis (the process of building collagen) may not occur. Adding to the HIFU controversy is the fact that these treatments are not regulated. That means they can be performed by either doctors, nurses or beauticians, who may or may not have received sufficient education and training. This has led to cases where the HIFU treatment was too shallow or too deep, resulting in less desired outcomes.

The Verdict

While HIFU is often seen as the more affordable of the two, many people don’t realise that they need more than just one treatment session. Ultherapy only requires one treatment to provide results at a much deeper level.

After performing Ultherapy for the past 7 years on 1000’s of happy patients, we have come to appreciate why it’s the gold standard for facial rejuvenation and skin lifting.

When’s the Best Time to Treat Summer Sun Damage on Your Chest?

Young woman lying in the sun

The short answer is: Winter. Living in Queensland has so many advantages, but not necessarily for our skin. Residents here are especially prone to sun damage, particularly on the chest. Is that a concern you have? If so, you’ll be happy to know that b clinic has a variety of effective treatment protocols and innovative devices to help. You can, of course, treat sun damage year-round, but you need to take extra precautions after treatment, especially in summer.

Let’s look at this topic more closely and answer some frequently asked questions about sun damage.

Why Does My Chest Skin Look Discoloured and Wrinkly?

Blame the sun. That bright, shiny orb in the sky is the primary cause of sun damage to your chest and elsewhere on your body. Sun damage doesn’t occur suddenly. It develops after years of exposure starting as early as childhood, continuing through adolescence and adulthood. It’s specifically the UV component that causes the skin damage, and it’s not just skin – it can pretty much damage any kind of material left outside in the sun!

Many people are unaware of the harm they have done to their skin until the damage becomes visible, typically as they enter their thirties or forties. Women in particular, at this age, find the skin on their chest and decolletage area is often more susceptible to damage than their faces.

How Do I Know If I Have Sun Damage on My Chest?

The chest is exposed to the sun all year round, not just in the wintertime. The first signs of UV damage to chest skin from winter or summer sun include:

  • Reddish tone
  • Freckles
  • Broken capillaries
  • Unwanted skin discolouration

Rays from the sun also break down collagen. This leaves your skin vulnerable to:

  • Uneven skin texture
  • Wrinkles
  • Sleep lines
What Can b clinic Do to Correct Sun Damage on My Chest?

It’s never a bad time to seek treatment at b clinic for a skin problem. However, the best time to treat sun damage on your chest (and face too) is during the cooler months. This is because we tend to cover our skin more during this time, which facilitates proper healing using two powerful tools: the Stellar M22 IPL device and the ResurFX non-ablative laser.

Which Treatment Corrects Sun Damage on the Chest?

To improve tone, pigmentation, freckles, age sunspots, redness and broken capillaries, we use the Stellar M22 IPL device. With four technologies in one platform, this device allows us to treat over 30 skin conditions. Stellar is considered optimal for photo-rejuvenation and treatment of benign pigmented lesions.

Which Treatment Stimulates Collagen Production on the Chest?

To smooth fine lines, improve overall skin texture, and stimulate collagen, b clinic recommends ResurFX non-ablative fractional laser treatments. Non-ablative lasers like ResurFX treat a wide range of skin concerns and require less downtime compared to ablative laser devices.

ResurFX stimulates the skin cells to repair and produce new collagen and elastin fibres in deeper layers of the skin without the damage more invasive treatments may cause. Old and damaged cells are replaced with fresh, glowing, healthy new skin.

Should I Consider a Fractional Laser Treatment?

An in-person consultation is the best way to answer that question. To treat deep chest lines, our highly experienced laser clinicians can perform a light ablative Erbium or CO2 fractional laser treatment to stimulate cell renewal and encourage new collagen fibres for smoother, tighter, and more youthful-looking skin.

Ablative treatments using CO2 and Erbium lasers are more powerful and will treat stubborn skin issues such as skin laxity, acne or surgical scars, and deep wrinkles. They work by removing the top layers of skin so new healthy skin cells can grow in its place. However, it should be noted that ablative treatments typically involve more downtime than non-ablative laser treatments.

Is There a Better Way to Correct Chest Skin Sun Damage?

Yes! A b clinic’s photofractional skin rejuvenation protocol combines IPL and ResurFX treatments in a single treatment session. The first step is the use of intense pulsed light. The second step is a treatment with the ResurFX non-ablative fractional laser. The third step is enjoying smoother, more radiant chest (and facial) skin.

How Will I Feel After a Photofractional Treatment at b clinic?

Immediately following treatment, our clients experience some redness or light swelling depending on their customised treatment settings. The swelling usually diminishes after a few hours, and the redness as quickly as the next day or over the next few days. Most clients resume their normal daily activities on the same day of treatment.

When Will I See Results from My Treatment?

After the first session, you may begin to notice improvement in skin tone and pigmentation. Typically, about 3 treatment sessions are needed to have visible improvement in the skin texture. You may continue to see improvements for up to 6 months following the course of treatments due to the stimulation of new collagen.

Is There Anything Else I Can Do To Prevent Chest Wrinkles?

Yes! Your sleep position may be ageing your chest. To maintain smooth skin or prevent chest lines while you sleep, b clinic recommends Skinvigor 8 silicone decolletage pads. They are available online or visit selected b clinic locations to talk over your selection with one of our skin experts.

Beginners guide to non-invasive cosmetic treatments

– by Dr Ann-Marie Almeida

Cosmetic medicine has come a long way in the last decade, offering a wide range of non-invasive procedures that can help you look and feel your best. These procedures are an effective way to rejuvenate or enhance your appearance and offer a lower-risk alternative to cosmetic surgery. If you’re new to non-invasive aesthetic procedures, this brief guide will help you understand what’s available and how to choose the right one for you.

1. Microdermabrasion and Micro-needling

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure that uses a crystal-tipped wand to gently exfoliate the outermost layer of the skin. This procedure can improve the appearance of fine lines, lighten acne scars, and leads to a generally brighter appearance of the skin. It’s a great option for those wanting a gentle introduction to skin treatments as it’s relatively painless with minimal (if any) downtime.

Micro-needling involves using a device with tiny needles to create small, controlled punctures in the skin. The needles penetrate the top layer of the skin, triggering the body’s natural healing response, and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin.  As we age, we are naturally losing the elastin and collagen content in our skin with each passing year, and sun exposure in Australia further contributes to this process. Therefore, this is a great treatment that can help to improve the appearance of fine lines, act in combination with other treatments for the prevention of fine lines and improve the tone and texture of the skin. I commonly advise this as a baseline skin health and prevention treatment.

Micro-needling can be performed on various areas of the body but is most commonly done on the face, neck and décolletage. It is a relatively quick procedure taking 30-60 minutes to perform, depending on the area treated. You may experience some light redness, very small bruises and mild swelling immediately following the procedure.  These side effects usually subside within a few hours to days. There may be some minor pain, and topical anaesthetic may be used to help with this.

At b clinic, we offer a treatment called the Beauty Booster. It’s a highly customised treatment where we control the depth of the micro-needle in the skin to inject a light dermal filler product, which helps bind water molecules and increase skin hydration. In addition, it can improve the appearance of dull skin and fine lines.

Chemical peels are a popular non-invasive procedure that can improve the texture and tone of your skin. They use a chemical solution to remove the superficial topmost layer of skin cells, revealing a smoother and more even complexion. The intensity of the peel depends on the strength of the solution and the time administered. Generally, peels are mild to moderate in strength. You may feel a slight tingling or burning sensation throughout the procedure. Downtime is usually minimal, with mild redness and possibly some swelling and skin peeling over the next few hours to days.

2. Chemical Peels

Chemical peels may be used to help improve a variety of skin conditions, such as acne, age spots, pigmentation, and fine wrinkles. This treatment can also be a good baseline treatment for skin health and prevention.

3. Laser Resurfacing

I believe laser is a great baseline skin treatment option because we can tailor the intensity of the treatment to address your personal concerns.

Simply put, lasers are devices that emit a concentrated beam of light that can be used to target specific tissues in the body. In cosmetic medicine, lasers are often used to improve the appearance of the skin by treating a range of conditions such as wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, small blood vessels, sun damage, tattoo removal and age spots. They work by delivering heat to the targeted area, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential for maintaining healthy, youthful-looking skin or breaking up pigment.

There are two general categories of cosmetic laser treatments: ablative and non-ablative. Ablative laser treatments remove the top layers of skin and penetrate deeper into the skin, making them more effective for treating deeper wrinkles, scars, and other skin imperfections. Non-ablative laser treatments, on the other hand, work by heating the underlying tissue without damaging the surface of the skin, making them better suited for treating milder skin conditions. The depth of the treatment will depend on the individual’s skin type and the severity of the condition being treated. It’s important to note 2 things about laser treatment:

1. Deeper laser treatments may require more downtime and can carry a greater risk of side effects such as redness, swelling, and scarring.

2. Results usually take time and repeat treatments to achieve ideal results. Everyone is different in how their skin behaves and heals in response to treatment. A few key factors that influence this is age, skin type, sun exposure and health status.

I recommend making a pre-procedure consult appointment in which your concerns can be explored, possible risks specific to you advised and your ability to accommodate any downtime worked out with the treating practitioner so that the most ideal laser treatment plan can be recommended.

3. Muscle Relaxant and Dermal Fillers

Muscle Relaxant and Dermal Fillers are the most popular non-invasive aesthetic procedures. Muscle relaxants are usually known by various brand names, but at their core, they are all botulinum toxin A which is a neuromodulator that is injected into the muscles that cause wrinkles/lines. This temporarily paralyses the muscles and b clinic specialises in tailoring this treatment to your desired outcome. This may be leaving some movement in the muscle, leaving some lines in certain places for a more natural look, all the way through to try to eliminate or decrease the movement or line. Everyone is different!

Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are used to add volume to the face. It can be used to rejuvenate (replace what you have naturally lost) or enhance (make existing features more prominent).

As we age, we naturally lose fat from our face, which causes loss of volume, decreased skin support and sagging of skin. Dermal fillers are a great non-surgical option to improve this volume loss, maintain youthful facial features and add underlying support for sagging skin. Treatment is usually well tolerated, and downtime can range from a few hours to two weeks, depending on the area treated and the extent of possible swelling and bruising.

4. Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP treatment is a regenerative therapy that has gained popularity in recent years for its ability to improve a wide range of aesthetic and medical conditions. PRP involves using your own blood, which is processed to concentrate the platelets and growth factors, creating a plasma rich in healing properties. In aesthetic medicine, PRP is either spread over micro-needled skin or injected into the skin to stimulate cell regeneration and elastin/collagen production. This aims to produce a brighter skin tone overall, help tighten skin, and improve texture and fine lines. It’s like an ingredient that gives your micro-needling treatment a boost!

6. Polydioxanone (PDO) matrix threads

PDO threads are a type of minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that uses dissolvable threads to tighten the skin at a deeper level than micro-needling and some forms of laser. These threads are made of a biodegradable material that is commonly used in surgical sutures, making it safe for use in the body. PDO threads are inserted into the skin using a fine needle, which is removed, leaving the thread in place. The threads then work to tighten the skin by promoting collagen production and improving the skin’s overall texture and tone.

PDO threads can be used to address a variety of concerns, such as mild sagging skin, wrinkles, and fine lines. It can also be used in the prevention and maintenance of skin collagen/elastin.  They are commonly used on the face, neck, and décolletage but can also be used on other areas of the body. PDO threads come in different shapes and sizes to accommodate different treatment areas and can be customised to achieve the desired result.

The procedure typically takes less than an hour and is done under topical anaesthetic.  Bruising and mild to moderate swelling are not uncommon and may take days to 2 weeks to settle.  Results are best seen in weeks to months as the body takes time to create collagen.  As with all non-invasive cosmetic procedures, this treatment needs ongoing, repeated treatments over time to maintain as we naturally continue to age.

These procedures are a summary of the most common and successful non-invasive cosmetic treatments performed to brighten, tighten, prevent, rejuvenate, or enhance. When considering a non-invasive aesthetic procedure, it’s important to choose a qualified practitioner to perform the procedure. Every procedure does come with its own set of risks, which I discuss in the free consult offered prior to procedure bookings. It’s also important to keep in mind that non-invasive aesthetic procedures are not a one-time solution and results vary from person to person. You may need multiple treatments for optimal results and some maintenance may be required to maintain the results. These procedures are also not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle and proper skincare. A good skincare routine, sun protection and a healthy diet are essential for maintaining good cosmetic health.
